It happened right there in the bakery dept.

This past Friday I ran into the grocery store to pick up a few items for the weekend.

I started in the bakery dept. for some fresh sandwhich bread, when out of the corner of my eye I saw her.
She was at least 15 feet away, but I recognized her.
My Grandma.
Ok, it wasn’t exactly her, but from the side and if I squinted a tad bit it looked just like her. Seeing dead family members is not that weird for me. *Especially at Publix.
The weirdest thing….is that immediately after seeing her, I could smell her.
Her smell.
I couldn’t tell you what her smell is, but I recognized it at once. My Grandma’s smell, not the lady shopping in the bakery dept. who was faking her way into my heart.

Right there in the grocery store, I had a visit from Grandma. My heart was fluttering, I had a smile plastered on my face; warm memories flooded my brain. The feeling lasted about 32 seconds, but it was a wonderful 32 seconds.

Dad, Suz, G’ma~~~nineteen seventy something.

*I’ve run into my Dad’s look alike in Publix before. He might have found me to be a bit weird since I stared at him for as long as I possibly could without being issued a restraining order.

  1. I see mine sometimes. Their polyester dresses or their head covering. Their wrinkly hands and their eye sparkle. Just like you I catch my breath. And wish. I'm glad God gave her to you.

  2. I haven't found look-alikes, but I often see people who very much remind me of my dad and sometimes it makes me cry. Still. I'm glad your memories were warm!

  3. How cool is it that she visited you, and in a public place. There's no forgetting the smell of your grandma. 🙂

  4. Nice to be reminded of your grandma and her smell. I know how much you love and miss her.Sometimes I'll see an older guy in the diner with a hat on and he reminds me so of daddy – I often get tears in my eyes! But they are good tears.Love to you all this Monday a.m.

(^-^)happy monday, for you.

  6. Jim and I were driving yesterday and we looked over to see a man who could have been his dad's twin driving the car next to us. Fortunately his dad (and the driving twin) are both still quite alive so we got a good laugh out of it. Love your story and especially the photo of you and Grandma!

  10. That has happened to me before too. Someone who looks like my grandma Lolo, but smells do it for me in a big way too. Great memories!

  11. I've experienced that feeling before. Not in Publix because we don't have one in our small town. I picked a fleece vest from my grandmother's things recently when my mama was going through them (Grandma died in 2006). When I got it home I opened it up and, oh my, how it smelled like her! I rolled it back up carefully and put it in my closet. Isn't it amazing how smells can cling and take us back?
