The Empress’ New Table And I Need Your Opinion.

Ya’ll, this was a ‘grammar worry’ writing the title right up there; did I write it correctly? Let me know. *wipes blogging sweat from forehead*

I hinted a few weeks ago about sharing a photo of our fabulous dining room table at our mountain home. It was created to just the right length for our space, 92″ with a stained yellow Georgia pine top and a painted, hand distressed base of black; do you love it?

It was custom made and it turned out even more beautiful than we expected! This will be an heirloom piece that will outlive us and hopefully will be passed down from generation to generation.

Think of all the meals, laughter, wine, games, etc we will enjoy at this table for years to come.

Would you like to come and have a meal with us? Not hungry? How about just some wine and cheese because I’m always down for wine and cheese.

Think of how much WEIGHT WE WILL LOSE with this table in our dining room!

HA! Were you thinking: Suz, my eyesight IS going! The table IS in fact being created right now and I’m told it will be here before Turkey Day!

Speaking of delicious critters…when the Coach and I visited the furniture maker at his shop, behind his home on a large piece of farm property, this guy (a rescue pig or pig rescue?) was keeping watch.

He never even picked up his head, and I was wondering, is he DEAD? Or is he faking being dead because he sensed how much the Coach loves to cook bacon?

Anyhoo, back to the table, it was custom built by an Amish wood worker and then the local guy (David) does the ‘finishing’ of it; custom painted/distressed. The Tops of the table are made from local Georgia yellow pine. How cool will that be? Very cool.

My dear readers, please go back to the first photo up top. Do you see that the ceiling in the dining room is painted the same color as the walls. How do you feel about this? Are your ceilings white? How would you feel about an entire home that has painted ceilings. Every.ceiling. Really. I need to know because I’m meeting with my painter very soon.

  1. In our dining room we have the ceiling painted one shade lighter than the color of the walls above the chair rail. It adds a warm glow to the room. In our home office we have the ceiling painted the same shade as the walls. It makes the room seem more cozy. Everywhere else we have white ceilings. My point being that I like both, depending on how you want the room to feel. I don’t see it as an either/or proposition.

  2. Our house(s) ceilings are the same as Ally’s. Most have the ceiling a shade lighter than the walls, but we don’t use very dark paint on the walls. The lakehouse especially has mostly creme walls to make it a light and airy place.

As far as the grammar question: when making a singular noun possessive, you can ALWAYS add an apostrophe + S. When the noun ends in S, you can choose to just add the final apostrophe. I always default to apostrophe + S because it’s always correct.

    1. Both you and Ally have inspired me to possibly change what I thought I was going to do. Hmmm…I’m so happy I asked for opinions.
As far as the grammar, I thought I was correct, but it never looks ‘correct’ to me.

  3. I think your title is correct.

Our ceilings are all white or off white BUT I am not one to take chances or be on the cutting edge of ANYTHING (see: blog comment today, counter top chunks between tiles? Huh?). I like the sound of what Ally describes. A shade lighter than the walls might make for a cozy space.

That pig definitely sensed that Coach was ready to start up his smoker.

I ordered a custom kitchen table when we did our kitchen. Found someone online because farm type workshops with decorative real pigs are tough to find in Chicago. I was a little, OK a LOT, nervous. It turned out EXACTLY like I imagined. Excited to see yours when we are not being made to feel like the Emperor with the ‘new’ clothes.

    1. Our furniture guy makes pieces and ships them all over the country….so maybe it’s the same guy? We’re just fortunate that he’s in our county and will deliver ours in person.
I get it, not everyone is a ‘decorator’, but still, I value your opinion too.

  4. Debra She Who Seeks

I was taught in school that an apostophe is all that is needed to indicate the possessive when the word in question ends with an “s” or especially “ss” in order to avoid a whole string of them. And I’m no decorator but judging from home makeover shows on TV, the former penchant for all-white ceilings is SO over, dahling.

    1. And look at you, paying attention to HGTV?! I’ve not noticed recently about the ‘not all white’ ceilings, but I know it was a ‘thing’ for a while.

  5. I am loving your home!!
So you are asking THE wrong woman about grammar. I am not even looking it up. You know I could care less about that stuff. Pshaw. 😉

I love the new table, Suz! It’s so light and airy!
I personally don’t mind the ceilings. I mean, white may make the rooms feel a little bigger? But the color up there now may make them seem cozier and warmer too.

I feel like a furniture maker with a pig outside is going to make an EXCELLENT table.

    1. Light and airy, that was the look we were going for.
I was totally going to have ALL the ceilings painted white, but now I’m thinking of going just a bit lighter. Which is such a great distraction considering the state of the world.

I love your dining room. Can’t wait to see the new table!! I’m actually planning to clean out my dining room today… it’s a catch all for random stuff!

  7. LOLOLOL everything about this cracked me up. The table! The pig! But seriously, about the ceiling. My friend painted her daughters’ rooms and ceilings the same colour and I had never heard of doing that – but I love it! I absolutely do and if we ever repaint that is what I am going to do.

My dad painted our house soon after we moved in and he painted the lower ceiling in the kitchen the same yellow as the walls. He swears I told him to, which I am certain I did not, but I really like it. And I would have said Empress’s, but I think your way is correct and my way does have an awful lot of esses.
